There I am!! It's 1:20 AM and I'm awake and on the front page of Etsy! What a cool feeling!! And what a really great list, don't you think?

The Crazy Day

This week is spirit week at Kevin's school and every day they do something different. Yesterday was pajama day so he wore his pj's all day! Fun! Well, today was "crazy hair day," so I thought I would give him just that--crazy hair. How do you like it?! :D

I asked him what everyone else in his class did with their hair. He said he was the only one who did anything and that they all laughed at him. I told him they were supposed to laugh because he had crazy hair and it was crazy hair day! That was the whole point! I think that made him feel a little better. (He did say that one little boy had the front of his hair painted white. Oh, and he told me the teacher had pigtails too! :) )

So we came home and later on while I was helping him with his homework, I noticed this red bump on his arm close to his elbow that looked like a fire ant bite! I asked him if he'd gotten bit today. He said no. So I looked a little closer at the spot on his arm. I said "Are you sure? Then what's this? Does it itch?" And that's when I noticed that the skin all around his elbow was completely broken out with red bumps!! I thought he'd probably put his elbow down in poison ivy or something at recess, or he'd come in contact with something and had an allergic reaction.

So I looked at his other arm and it was the same way! OK. So he'd more than likely propped his chin up on his elbows but did so in or on something strange that had broken him out. But why wasn't it itching? He then told me it hurt when he straightened out his arms but it didn't itch. Hmmmm. It wasn't there this morning.

I raised his shirt and looked at his back. Spots. Maybe 15 or so. I looked at his belly. A spot next to his bellybutton. Well, I didn't want to think what I was thinking. Surely he didn't contact something through his shirt. These bumps looked like fire ant bites with a little yellow spot in the middle. Ummm, better call the doctor.

"You might want to bring him in, but use the back entrance in case it's chickenpox."

OK.... That's not what I wanted to hear.

The doctor looked at him very closely--with gloved hands.

"I highly suspect this is chickenpox due to the look of these bumps and their location. If it weren't for the ones on his back and belly then I would believe it could be something he'd contacted. But with them on his back and belly and the pustules in the middle of the spots, it's likely chickenpox."

But he was vaccinated!! How did he get them? I thought that being vaccinated meant you didn't get the disease! NOT!

Well, here's what I found on WebMD:

"Most health organizations recommend the chickenpox vaccine. It provides about 95% protection from moderate or severe infection and 70% to 85% protection against mild infection. Occasionally people who receive the vaccine develop what is called breakthrough infection. This may occur when they are exposed to a "wild-type" chickenpox virus. But in these cases, the infection is mild, with fewer blisters and symptoms than the usual chickenpox infection. Talk with your health professional if you have questions or concerns about the vaccine.

"Some research indicates that the chance of developing a breakthrough chickenpox infection after vaccination increases with the length of time since vaccination. In one study, the effectiveness of the vaccine declined after the first year when given to children younger than 15 months. As a result of these studies, experts are debating whether a second vaccination, or booster, should be recommended for children younger than 13.

"You also can prevent chickenpox by having a shot of chickenpox antibodies soon after exposure to the virus. If you have been in contact with a person who has chickenpox and are not sure whether you are immune, talk with your health professional about whether you should have either the chickenpox vaccine or antibodies."

Kinda like when you get a flu shot but still get the flu. It doesn't stop you from getting it completely but greatly reduces your chance of getting it and may make it less severe if you do get it. So of course, Kevin falls into the percentage that breaks through!! I had it twice when I was a kid, and that was long before any vaccine was available. Since I had it twice, I figure that Kevin will have it this once since he had the vaccine. Makes sense to me.

WebMD states "Chickenpox is most contagious from 1 to 2 days before the rash appears until the blisters have dried and formed crusts. If you get a chickenpox vaccination, you are contagious only if you develop blisters. You remain contagious as long as new spots continue to develop and until all blisters have crusted over." The handout the doctor gave me states that exposure to the virus could have occured 14-16 days prior to breakout but can be from 10 to 21 days." And boy is it highly contagious!

The doctor told me that because he is taking Zyrtec and has had the vaccination, this will probably be a mild case. (Boy I hope so if we're lucky!)

I figured his croup and fever that he had weekend before last (yes, croup) was probably the precursor to his chickenpox now. Interesting looking back at it and noticing these things.

(So everyone at my sisters house this past weekend has been exposed. Just thought you all would want to know!!)

I learned a lot on WebMD. My brother points me to that site a lot. He's a pharmacist. He knows these things! :)

Now, with only 3 weeks of school left, Kevin gets chickenpox. Just his/our luck. He may be out of school for 2 weeks. Theoretically he could be. Hopefully he won't be. It's just never a good time to be sick. And we're sick of being sick.

At least he's not feeling sick...

Oh, what a crazy day!

Happy Mother's Day!

Just a quick note to say Happy Mother's Day to everyone who is a mother. I'll be going to see my mom this weekend and I hope you all see or talk to you moms this Sunday.

I thought I'd post this picture because I think it's one of the cutest pictures ever of Kevin when he was a baby. I thought I'd share it with you all. You can see how much he has changed. He still has those eyes though.

Strawberry Time!

It's that time again in the Carolinas: strawberry pickin' time!

The boys made the trip down to the Bush-N-Vine in York Co., SC, where they picked 3 gallons of the most beautiful, sweet, juicy, perfect berries you've ever seen. These are NOTHING like the store bought kind. These are the honest-to-goodness real thing. The ones from the store have no taste whatsoever in comparison with these. These will blow you away!



When I bit into the first berry it was like a little taste of heaven. These are the best ones I've tasted in a few years due to the drought. There was apparently enough rain this year to make them sweet and juicy, something the last few years' have not quite been. Though they were good, they weren't this good!



There was a mutant berry in the lot. I picked up this one and just had to laugh when I saw it.

Of course, I had to get a picture of it since it reminded me of a huge nose or maybe even a cartoon-like hippo thingy. It even stood up all by itself as if it had legs! I posed this question on Flickr: "What do you see?" Visit the picture to see the comments people made by clicking on the photo. It's interesting what everyone sees in it.



I ate my fill of strawberries, popping one right after the other. So did Kevin. He did tell me, however, that he ate so many in the field while picking that he didn't want any more for a while. I think I could eat them all day long and never get sick of them! There will be strawberry shortcake, and jam made as well. I'll make smoothies and milkshakes, have berries on cereal, berries dipped in chocolate, and berries with bananas on ice cream topped with chocolate syrup for a sundae. I'll put fresh berries in Kevin's lunch and put berries in the freezer (if there are any left!). Then we'll have to go back and get some more!

Berries like this only come once a year. Twice if you're lucky and catch them in both North Carolina and South Carolina. I'm all for getting them again when they ripen in North Carolina. But for now I'm very happy with these. As I can't squat or bend for any amount of time due to my bum knee and bad back, I am left with the pleasure of washing, capping, cutting and eating them (oh, and photographing them!). I do appreciate the effort the boys put into the harvest. They did a terrific job and got some beauties. Thanks boys!

I'll leave you with this pretty little butterfly I saw yesterday. When Kevin went out to 'skate' in the driveway, I noticed this little beauty next to the garage door. It must have been stunned or something because it didn't move when I approached it. So I ran and got the camera to get a picture. It obliged.

It eventually did recover and went on its merry way. It was fun getting that close to a butterfly and not having it fly off immediately.

My Son (and other things)

I gave Kevin a rose this past New Year's Eve. It's long since dead, dried and quite withered, but it still remains beautiful. We will all be slightly dry and withered with age, but we're still going to remain beautiful, inside and out.

Being 46 (47 next month), this old dried out rose now means a lot to me. Not only because it's still beautiful in its present state, but because Kevin loves it so. He won't let me throw it away. He says "That's my rose you gave me, Mommy. You can't throw it away."

I guess now I understand why. :)

I've been spending a lot of time learning to use my new camera (yay!) and just living life instead of writing in my blog (sorry). I've been outside a lot watching Kevin as he learns to roller skate and ride his new scooter. He's got the skinned knees and bruises to show for both!

And then yesterday he wiped out on his scooter. He went down face first into the grass. I thought for sure he'd get up without any teeth, but he didn't. He skinned his chin pretty good though. I must say he's much better at scootering than he is at skating, but he's learning and having fun, and that's what counts I guess. If you look closely in the picture below, you'll see his skinned up chin.

His homework today was to write a story.
He chose to write about yesterday's scooter wipe-out.
Read it for yourself.

I love his story, don't you?

I'm very proud of him for another reason as well. When I opened up his school agenda today this is what I read:



Now how about that? You can't beat that with a stick! I'm so very proud of him and I most certainly told him so! :D

He's growing up and getting tall.
He's becoming a handsome young man.

He lost his left front tooth and now he looks so cute!!

And the right front tooth is loose too so it won't be
long until it comes out. Then he'll really look cute!

I've mainly been trying to figure out my camera during my absence. It's a Canon S5 IS. It's the one I said I wanted. I'm not sure about some things yet, but so far it's fun. It doesn't do the jewelry as well as I hoped but I'm still learning I suppose. So far, I've had an awful time getting the blues in my jewelry to photograph correctly, but I've had a good time taking pics of Kevin and other things. Indoor pics leave a bit to be desired because I'm not a fan of using the flash. When you set the ISO so the pics will shoot properly, you get an awful lot of noise in the photos. I'm bummed about that. It's still early though and the jury is still out. I have a lot to learn still. I did get some great shots at the NC Zoo. We took a trip there during Kevin's week of spring break. Here's a couple of my favorites I took while there.

There are a ton more pictures in a set on Flickr and I invite you to go and see them. We had so much fun at the zoo. It was well worth seeing Kevin's face as he viewed the different animals. We'll have to go back.

So that's an update on what's been going on and why I've been absent. More than likely I'll be absent again, off taking pictures and trying to figure out the camera. Or spraying Bactine on Kevin's knees! I'll leave you with this video of him skating.

Woohoo!!

Woohoo!! Gonna toot my horn here for a minute!

When I returned home yesterday afternoon after running some errands, I checked Etsy only to discover that my "Twirly Slide" earrings were on Etsy's front page!! Yay!! I almost missed seeing them there but I got an email from the very sweet Katja Adams telling me I was up there! Thanks Katja! And thanks Etsy Gods (as Cindy of Starry Designs calls them)! It was a thrill!

During the front page appearance, I got 24 new hearts and sold that pair of earrings! That's a whopping amount of hearts for just two hours or so. That particular pair of earrings received over 700 new views!!! Wow! When I have done main showcases (lasting 24 hours), I have acquired as many as 17 hearts, but that's for an entire 24 hours. The front page appearance was less than two hours maybe, I'm not really sure. That just goes to show you what kind of exposure you really do get by appearing on the front page. A LOT! And I'm very thankful for it!

Also appearing on the front page was the wonderful "Shop Clementine". Cassie is a wonderfully talented designer and I've admired her jewelry for quite a while. We have both decided we want to do the front page again really soon!! :D

I also wanted to update you on Kevin. He started getting sick again while at Granny's for Easter. On Sunday his nose got stuffy and he got all clogged up. He didn't start running a fever though until we got back on Tuesday. I kept him out of school on Wednesday and his fever went up to 100.7. I made an appointment at the pediatrician and when we got there that afternoon his fever was 103!!! They gave him some more Motrin and did a strep culture. It was negative. His ears had some fluid but were not infected. His nose of course was inflamed and impossible to breathe through (they took his temperature under his arm). They did not put him back on an antibiotic and said this was probably viral. We were to go back in 48 hours if he was not better.

Well, he was still running a slight fever as of yesterday afternoon although his nose had slowed down and he was feeling much better. I still have him out of school today since he's not been 24 hours without a fever yet and they don't want them to return otherwise. But today he's improved even more, so maybe this time it will be just a quick virus that doesn't linger forever and ever like usual.

Poor guy. I really feel for him. When he was brushing his teeth Tuesday night I was looking at him and imagining how it must be for him. He looked at me with his toothbrush still in his mouth and said "why do you look so sad?" (I wasn't aware I looked sad.) I told him I just felt sorry for him being sick all the time and I knew it wasn't any fun being sick. He just shrugged his little shoulders like "oh well, c'est la vie!" Such a cutie. He's feeling so much better today so I think the worst is over.
